It is believed that Jews also spend this day fasting, that the Prophet of Islam Muhammad bin Abdullah recommends fasting today as well, and that fasting should be kept by adding the day of Ashura and the day before or the day after, in order not to resemble Jews.

“It is customary to add seven or eight kinds of grains to the ashura in Muharram. For this reason, he should prepare mortars such as beans, chickpeas, broad beans and rice and then start cooking.
In the first place, the half-crushed wheat should be put in a large pot, filled with three ounces of water, and then put on the fire. Usually, they put the wheat on the fire in the evening and then leave it until the morning. The wheat, which starts to boil in the first fire, continues to cook slowly as the fire turns to ashes, and it is perfectly cooked until the morning. Wheat water is tehmil, the grains crack and become mushy.
In the second, you should soak the chickpeas, broad beans and beans in water overnight, remove their shells in the morning, and cook the almonds separately until they become soft. Then, take the cooked wheat into another bowl, add water as necessary and mix it to dilute it. Badehu should place the rice and sugar on the fire by putting some razaki and a few dried dates. When it comes to a boil, the other mortars should be cooked by adding broad beans, chickpeas, beans and mixing. When the ashura starts to become helmed and like marrow, ten or fifteen dirhams of starch should be crushed in warm water and poured into it, depending on the amount of the ashura, and then it should be boiled again while stirring. At that time, something like rose oil, musk, rose water should be added and removed from the fire. It should be dispensed into bowls and plates and put on top of things like hazelnuts, pistachios, almonds, walnuts and currants.”
